PERSONAL STORIES

RICARDO BROSTELLA

I used to have complex partial epileptic seizures, recalled Ricardo, who used to take up to 12 pills a day from the age of 10 to treat epilepsy. "What was happening to me, and I didn't know, was that I might be mentally absent for two, three minutes."

For more than 20 years, Ricardo Brostella lived in a dull world full of medicines. He felt exhausted and numb all the time. Both his parents and his sister realized that young Ricardo was suddenly isolating himself, remaining completely immobile with his mind "blank".

Dr. Augusto Gerbaud L., a relative of the family, mentioned a prestigious Panamanian doctor who evaluated patients with epilepsy and whose medical team performed successful operations in the United States. Ricardo decided to pack his bags and meet the man who would change his life forever.

According to Dr. Kuzniecky, Ricardo received a temporal lobe resection. A small area in the temporal lobe was causing the seizures in the hippocampus. "What we did was enter that part of the brain and do a very small resection of the hippocampus and a small part of the temporal lobe. That healed him".
